Ott-Goebel Consulting organized an evening with Kai Strittmatter, the longstanding China correspondent of Süddeutsche Zeitung. He is known as one of the best China experts and published his book „Reinventing Dictatorship“ last year. In his book, he critizises China´s development to a control state similar to what Orwell and Huxley described in their novels. China has an „office for honesty“, cameras everywhere in the public arena, face recognition and a social credit system which is still in pilot phase but causes a headache for all democratic thinking people. The lively discussion with Kai Strittmatter about the motives of the Chinese government, reactions of the Chinese people and consequences for us as Europeans came to the conclusion that we Germans should continue to do trade and exchange with China because this is good for the development of the country, but we should at the same time not forget our Western values and defend them.
